2000 Johnson 130 HP OP. Starting system from the key to the motor have just 50 hrs. Prior owner used boat very little. Once the key is turned and it runs through diagnostic, I turn the key to start but the starter motor activates only 70% of the time. The other 30% of the time hear just an electrical noise at the motor (urrrrrrrrr). Sometimes it woks first attempt, others times two or more tries. No diff. if warm or cold starts. Checked connections at battery and starter, clean and tight. Battery is new. Concerned that problem could go to 100% or cause a safety issue if I need to start first try. Thanks.

Sounds like bendix is stickin a bit. Clean with solvent and use light oil sparingly to lube the assembly. With key and batteries off, use your hand to check that the bendix slides up to the flywheel without resistance.
Good luck

If that doesn't do it, replace the solinoid. They are only about $15. and I consider it part of routine maintenance.

If that takes care of your problem, take the old solinoid and break it apart, (carefully, like in a vice), and look at what it is and how it works! Then you'll understand why I replace them as routine maintenance.

Good Luck! and welcome aboard m8. :)
