Starter running clockwise?

Trying to get my 1983 Mercury 800 started. The starter spins with the key, but the Bendix will not rise when the starter spins. But I've noticed that the starter is spinning clockwise. Based on the YouTube video's I've seen (this is my first outboard), the motor runs clockwise, so the starter should run CCW. The starter spinning the wrong way would also explain why the Bendix doesn't lift. I have it wired just as the diagrams say I should.....positive battery post to the solenoid, negative battery post to the bolt on the top/side of the starter. I'm wondering if a bad solenoid or rectifier could cause this? Every connection is cleaned and tight, I have two batteries both fully charged. I've searched, and I can't seem to figure out where to go from here. Any guidance would be most appreciated.....thanks in advance.

Re: Starter running clockwise?

Now that I'm back from walking the dog, I should own up to the stupid mistake that was causing my problem. I cleaned and re-shrinkwrapped the terminal ends coming off of the motor, but....I put the red shrinkwrap on the negative, black on the positive. So when I looked at the battery, the colors were right, but once I cut away the shrink wrap, I saw my screw up. Corrected that, cranked right over.

Moral of the story? Pay attention when you shrink wrap.........

If your motor has a rectifier you surely zapped it...
It takes only a nano second...

25$ part though...
