Starter rope snapped and needs to be replaced

I picked up a pretty beat up 1998? 5hp 2 stroke on the cheap. When I was trying to get it started the starter rope snapped and needs to be replaced.

Is this difficult or is there anything I should watch out for when taking apart the assembly?

Also any idea where I could find the proper replacement rope and a new handle? It seems more difficult finding parts for these engines online.

I appreciate any input!

Re: Starter rope snapped and needs to be replaced

If it's a Tohatsu/Nissan brand Just take appart starter case by removing bolts, definitely starter spring has unrolled, will need to rol it again some ? n? of turns when changing for a new rope to make sure all rope returns nicely rolled inside plastic reel. Any good quality nylon for curtain will do, just use same gauge and cut to original lenght.

Re: Starter rope snapped and needs to be replaced

Thanks for the reply. It is a Nissan I believe model # NS5B1. I have to get the serial off it when I'm down at the boat. Would the manual ( thinking of picking one up) specify how many turns to roll the starter spring? I am not mechanically inclined but don't have the money to bring it in to a shop so I'm going to figure it out. Again thanks a lot.

When winding the starter spring, rotate the reel to the direction of turn (left turn) at pulling out the rope. Then, set the spring so that the reel rotates 1/4 of a turn to one and 1/4 of a turn when rope is fully pulled out. Apply anti-freeze grease to both ends.

What Luis said... plus... You can pick up a Factory service manual at any Nissan/Tohatsu dealer, including me, for about $44.17. They may want the precise model (not year), in your case probably NS5B. Replacing the rope in the recoil will require some patience. If the spring is still OK (usually is), you can use any good quality nylon, dacron, or spectra line of appropriate diameter and length. If you want to go the expensive route, you can also get an original one from your dealer as 3B2050130M STARTER ROPE $11.07. Basically you will fill the rope reel with turns of line until it is almost full, and then wind the whole mechanism up to tension the spring. If you don't tension the spring quite enough, the handle won't retract all the way back... if you tension it too much, you won't be able to get all the rope out before the spring winds up tight.

Re: Starter rope snapped and needs to be replaced

Thank you both for the advice. I ordered the part and when it arrives this week I'll install and update.

Once I wind the the mechanism how is the spring set? This will probably be obvious once I get in there and am looking at it but I thought I would ask.

Thanks again,
Darren

Replied to your PM.

Once the starter rope is loaded in the spool, you can engage the rope into the "cut" in the spool, and continue winding (tensioning the spring) until you reach the proper index (by trial and error), and then slip the end of the rope through the front grommet area, and attach the handle. You need just enough spring tension to ensure that the handle comes back to the motor after pulling.
