Hello everyone, thanks in advance for any help....

I need to remove the starter on my 1987 5.7 260 mercruiser. Any help or guidance? It appears to be the original, but not sure. Thanks, BK

Re: Starter removal

1. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE.
2. Disconnect the wires from the starter.
3. Remove 2 mounting bolts.
4. Lift starter out of boat.

The only thing I would add to Don's advice is to stack some pieces of lumber under the starter to hold it up as you remove it. Takes some weight off the bolts and your hands. Hy

Good point!

It's amazing how easy things are to replace when the engine is on a stand. (I realize the original poster did not say that either ;) )

Re: Starter removal

Thanks to everyone. I got it out. I conducted all the tests that Don S described in another thread and it appears to be the starter. I am trying to figure out the correct replacement. Would anyone please help? My s/n is B453879. Thanks in advance. BK
