I have a 1994 Volvo Penta 4 cyl 3.0 L engine. I recently got a loud grinding noise when attempting to start the engine. I gave it about 4 tries but the engine didn't start, the week before I was able to start the engine right away. Although it did give problems after I stop to refuel and attempted to start it. I got a similar noise but it starter after several tries. I am attempting to remove the starter but I am unable to remove one of the bolts. I can't get anything in there!! It is wedged in a corner. Any tricks on how to get to the stupid bolt? I could grind the plate, but I never done that before and I don't have the tools (suggestions on what to buy/rent.) Grinding seems like an option if I had the right tool, but I am afraid I could damage something.

A Thin-walled 9/16" Socket usually works on the inner bolt, that's next to the flywheel cover pan..........

You may also try removing the 6 or 8 bolts that hold the flywheel cover. Removing the cover could allow the socket to get on the inside bolt that holds the starter. Reinstall the starter and then put flywheel cover back. You may have to use a little force to get the cover back in place.
Good Luck!
