starter rebuild

[1993 celebrity 4.3L]

I pulled my failed starter today. It is the original unit which is a Merc starter. We have a very credible auto electirc shop in my town that I've used many times for my auto work. My question is, does the marine rating on a starter come from the internal parts or just the external housing. In other words if I have an auto electric place rebuild the unit, would it still be considered marine or does it take special parts to keep the marine rating?

Ask them; probably.
It is only the screens on the exterior, to keep sparks in, that is different.
Original housing, it will work.
