Happy Easter
I just bought a 2001 Tahoe Q3 as a project boat and I need to replace the starter. After doing some searching I noticed price ranges from $64 to $350 I'm not opposed to spending money, but am opposed to throwing my money away. Can someone tell me why such a price difference, I am skeptical on whether these parts are quality or not and whether or not its price gouging.
Thanks in advance
Allen

Re: Starter Question

you get what you pay for?? thats all i can think of :)

what i would do is, remove the starter motor assy - ask your boating friends, folks at the marina, etc...who aroung here does good reputable marine repair??

bring it to them and have it rebuilt, or if you are savvy enough rebuild it yourself

Re: Starter Question

Marine use only as its more enclosed and water proof/tight and worth the bucks . But hey try to get away from a Fire or explosion while your in your boat .

Re: Starter Question

If you are mechanically inclined, I'd try to rebuild it myself also. There is usually not much that can go wrong with them other then the brushes and bearings. And usually if they require a core charge to buy a new one or a remanufactured one, then they are easily rebuildable as well. Otherwise they would charge for that core. If you look on the web I bet they even have IPBs (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) for your starter too. And most likely you could purchase individual parts if needed...

Re: Starter Question

Thanks for all your advice guys I now have my original starter and had it rebuilt today.
Next question on this Tahoe Q3 is.... facing the engine compartment from inside the boat there is what seems to be an oil pump with a reservoir on the lower left mounted to the fiberglass, can someone tell me what that is?

Thanks

Re: Starter Question

When you change subjects (like starter to what is this reservoir) you might want to start a different thread. Not many people here look at a title saying starter to help id a reservoir.

Post a picture, any engine reservoirs are mounted on the engine, not fiberglass. Probably something the boat manufacturer or the previous owner installed.

Re: Starter Question

If it's a GM PG260 starter, you can now buy the ring gear on ebay. That was the only thing that failed on mine.

Ayuh,.... Sounds like the Trim pump...

'n boats have a Portside, 'n Starboard side,...
You should be usin' the terms, so's there ain't no confusion 'bout which side yer talkin' 'bout...

Sounds like a trim pump.

More information on the engine and less (read 'none') on the boat. Please tell us the engine (eg, 4.3MPI, 5.7Mag) and the drive (eg Alpha One Gen II, Bravo III), and also please post serial numbers of the engine and drive. It helps with finding exactly what you have and enables us to give you more accurate information.

Re: Starter Question

Could be a trim tab pump, engine numbers would be meaningless. Why I said post pictures.

That info was for the next person looking to fix a GM starter and using the search feature... I had been occasionally looking for the ring gear for my old starter online for 4+ years and then they suddenly became available. My old starter is all back together and a "like new" spare. Glad I kept it. Fixed it for <$15.
