Correct me if im wrong guys, but the starter bendix shaft is not suppose to stay engaged in the fly wheel correct?? Im having a brain fart. Having trouble starting , just turning over, and noticed the starter gear is staying in the flywheel gear, and not dropping. I have very limited starter knowledge, what could this be? Ty each and all for your input

Re: Starter Question

The starter gear stays up in the flywheel teeth, on any motor I've worked on ,if it is cranked but doesn't start. Works fine when the motor starts.

Re: Starter Question

I see ty, never had it do that before. Guess Ill have to check spark tomorrow to see whats going on, or maybe the key switch, im not sure whats going on with it now. I could of swore the the bendix dropped before if it didnt fire on the first crank, or maybe ive had too many brown pops tonight, lol. ;)

Re: Starter Question

I suppose it does that to prevent throwing off the timing??

Re: Starter Question

If the engine is turning over hard, the bendix may indeed stick. The starter bendix will not throw off timing because that can't happen unless the flywheel key is sheared. Further, the bendix does not, nor is it supposed to stay engaged with the flywheel even if the engine doesn't start. Either the bendix itself has some burrs on the nubs that ride in the grooves on the starter shaft or on the bedix theeth, the starter shaft itself is all gunked up, or there are burrs on the shaft itself. Clean things up and lubricate with light machine oil and the bendix should drop out.

Re: Starter Question

This subject starts a big argument every time it comes up, which is often.

Bottom line: Once the bendix is engaged with the flywheel teeth, one of two things must happen for it to disengage.

1: The flywheel must turn faster than the starter.

2. The starter must turn backwards.

Since the bendix is on a screw spirol there is no way in heck it can go back down unless one of the above happens. Something has to turn to "unscrew" it.

In other words, don't worry about it and focus on whatever the real no-start problem is.
