Ok guys I have 2001 chaparral with a mercruiser 5.0 EFI. Went out on the boat yesterday and it didn't want to turn over. After about 5 -6 tries it fired right up. So went and had a great time, now for the ride home. Same thing happened took about 5-6 tries. So I was just looking at the starter looks like the paint cooked off of it. Going to go test everything later on. What do you guys think? Is it the starter? How much is this going to cost me? How hard is the starter to change?

Thanks

Re: starter problems

You could be having hydrolock problems. Was the starter hitting hard ? Might be wise to remove the plugs and check for any signs of water or rust staining on them.

If thats Gulfport Ms.......Me too ;)

Re: starter problems

It looks like it's been wet. The saltwater here is a killer. Note the green color of the wire from the solenoid to the starter motor. I believe you found the problem. Would be a good thing to check all the battery connections, even the grounds at the motor. Also make sure your not using the wing nuts on the battery, replace them with standard nuts and use a wrench to tighten them.

The starter doesn't look very good, but that doesn't mean that is your problem.
When you say it didn't want to turn over, does that mean that it tried to but couldn't, did it click, buzz, grrrrind, or what?
This might help in your troubleshooting.

No it didn't try. I think there was a buzz. Your link was helpful. It all points to the starter also. Just double checking before I start buying parts.
