Starter Problems

I have a 1992 Yamaha 115hp outboard. While running along on the lake the other day there was a grinding noise and a sudden loss of power. It appears the start gear engaged itself while running along. The result was to melt the battery terminal. I have corrected the battery and pushed the pinion gear down off the fly wheel, but when attempting to start the engine the starter doesn't appear to run fast enough. Also, the pinion occassionally jams in the fly wheel. I presume I need a new starter motor, but does anyone know what caused this? Is there other cases of this happening?

Re: Starter Problems

My starter did the same thing, it was turning really slow, had it rebuilt once,it was the bushings, it did the same thing 1 year later, it let me sitting again, just bought a new 1 from US Marine, paid 159.00 better safe than sorry. Don't go out and buy a rebuilt either, mine also had a delay after I turned the key, runs perfect now.
