starter problem?

I have a 25hp 4 stroke and it has been great until tonight. I hit the starter and it started and was humming really loud. I pulled the kill cord and it just kept humming. I got the battery box lid off and pulled the power and it stopped. When I tried to hook the battery back up it tired to start all on it's own with the kill cable still pulled. Any idea's of what is wrong and is there any way to fix this without a huge mechanics bill? Thanks for any help.

And does that mean I have to take it to get it worked on, or is there some way I can get it unstuck myself? Thanks.

Sure you can fix it. Replace the relay/solenoid. Internal contacts have welded themselves together. No fixing it short of replacement. I shojuld add though, that make sure the ignition switch is not stuck in the start position.

Disconnect the battery before you attempt to remove the relay or do any other work on motor. The relay should be an easy replace/fix, if that's what it is. A manual for your motor would be helpful, but you should be able to trace your main starting circuit cables to that relay fairly easily. Good Luck!
