starter problem on Volvo 3.0

The starter on the port engine will only make a humming sound when I attempt to crank the engine. The battery is good. I started the starboard engine with no problem. I took the starter off and bench tested it. It engaged with no problem.

The port engine gear shifter did not want to move at first. After working it back and forth it started moving. But not the same range as the starboard lever. I thought maybe the engine might be in gear and was not letting the starter engage. So I moved the lever out of neutral and tried it. I found out if the lever is not in the neutral position no power goes to the starter.

I have not checked at the stern drive to see if it is in gear yet. Any ideas on what to check next will be great. The motor only has 49 hours on it but has not been cranked in two years. The starboard engine cranked right up and ran great. This boat belonged to my father who passed away a couple of months ago and I don't know a lot about boats.

Thanks

You will get the best help with the numbers off the tags of the motors and what type of drive

Like AQ130 motor #hhshsjhd and 270 outdrive

I do know that the out drives are SX model. I will get the information off the engine tags too.

Thanks
