Starter problem on '93 Johnson 40hp

The small starter gear on top of the starter gets stuck in the down position and will not come up the starter shaft to engage the motor gear. I can tap on the gear lightly and it will free it up, but not always. Is there an easy fix?

Howdy, IBFSHIN.<br /><br />I would clean the shaft and threads thoroughly, then lube it with light oil.<br /><br />Good luck.
