Starter problem on 50 Merc. Can't get a manual right now.

I bought boat with about a 1970 50 H.P. Merc on it and it has not been started in a long time. The battery cables were both red so I hope I have the polarity correct (think so). I bought a new starter for it because I thought the old one was shot (very worn). The starter spins counter clockwise when you turn the key, but the gears do not go out to the end of the shaft (which would turn the motor clock wise). I'm trying to figure out why it does not engage with the motor. It has to be something simple. I can go shell out the 25 bucks for a manual, but maybe I can find out before I do. Which way should the starter and the motor turn? I hope someone can tell me because I had this question on here earlier today and no one responded.

Work the spiral up down action on the starter Bendix while you give it a little spary lube. Make sure the momentum of the starter shaft is turning correctly.

I have the same engine. The starter never wants to jump up high enough and engage the flywheel when the battery is low. Put a fresh battery in it after you lube the bendix like the other poster recommended. The starter should jump right up and contact the flywheel gears when you crank the key. Check ebay motors for manuals...not the aftermarkets like Seloc and Clymers, go for a Merc service manual. You can find one there for less than $20 and its a good investment if you plan to keep the outboard. Good motors in my limited experience.

Rich,
Forgot to point you to the old Merc board. You may get more specific answers there. Go to: www.pfs-ware then John's Old Merc site, then the Q&A page.

I dont believe your starter would go backwards just by reversing the cables. But you should trace the cables to be sure you are connected right.
Negative cable should trace to the powerhead/
engine block for a good ground.Positive should
trace to the large terminal on the solinoid.
Be sure all connections are clean and tight and battery is fully charged.
