I just installed a new starter and a rebuilt carb. I store my boat 65 miles away at the lake so I had no way to test it. Took it to the lake and got it running on the dock, went to turn it off, and it kept on running. It did not stumble or anything, ran just like normal even with the key out. I pushed the choke closed to stall it, looked at the wires on the starter and thought maybe I had put the purple wire and the yellow in the wrong place. I tried to switch them but the purple one I had put on the right would not come off, the bolt just kept on turning without moving.
I figured since it ran, I would drive around a bit and warm the engine and then come back to the dock and tune the carb. Figured I could mess with the starter later as long as it started. Bad Idea!!!! I head out from the dock and start to increase the throttle, I look back and see water shooting up from the port side of the outdrive so I start slowing down and turning back towards the dock. I am about 200 yrs from the dock and the boat just dies. No power to the motor at all, not even a click, but the stereo will still turn on and off with the key.
The wind is blowing me away from the dock strong enough that I can not paddle and it is too deep to anchor, no other boats in site, and I'm the only trailer there. I figure some fishermen will come along sometime, wind really picks up and I keep trying to start it, but nothing. At least the wind is blowing me in a direction that I will hit shore in site of the ramp, but 4 miles to walk around the lake. Finally I see a boat and they tow me back to shore.
Did I hook up the purple and yellow wire wrong and blow out the solenoid and starter? The 3 big wires were on the big post, the purple one was to the left of that and yellow to the right. If They were wrong, would that have destroyed the coil too? I tested the middle post with the 3 big wires after this happened and it was getting 12v with the key on or off, did not test any other wires.
Also, what could the water have been shooting up, I did install a transducer on that side, but seemed like a lot of water shooting up. I did run this boat 3 weeks ago in it ran fine, except I could not tune the carb, and the starter was sticking. The only things that changed were the carb, starter, and I left the outdrive in the up position and it was getting around 30, I did drain the block and manifolds. it was defiantly pumping water and did not warm up at all. What could cause the water shooting up besides the transducer?
Sorry for dragging on, on a simple question, but do I just need to buy a new starter and hook it up right? Or am I in much more trouble? Please tell me everything I would need to test as it is not as easy as going outside and hooking it to a hose, or testing wires. If those wires were wrong, would it cause it to keep running with the key off?
Sorry, this was a 1986 4.3l chevy on a stringer out drive, It had the big starter, and I replaced with one of the smaller ones.
Thanks in advance,
Scott
