It was a beautiful day here today. Mid 80's won't happen again for months. Clear skys and beautiful views of Mt. Hood, from the Columbia river could vanish for months at any given time, so I loaded up the family and we put the boat in.

First time I stopped, the fun was over. The starter turns, but would not engage the flywheel. Luckily we got a tow to a place we could paddle to a dock from, but I never could get it to fire up. I checked the starter, to make sure it was on tight (I'm a boating n00b), turned the belt a dozen+ rotations, hit the starter with a hammer, etc.... It spins, whines, and schreeches, but that's it.

Do I need a new starter? Any ideas?

It spins, whines, and schreeches, but that's it.

If it makes screeching noises, time to get it off the boat and inspected and checked out.
Does your have a solenoid on it?
