I have a problem with my 1994 Johnson starter. When i turn the key sometimes the bendix will turn but not engage. Other times it will engage for a few cranks then drop off and other times it will work completely normal for the whole day. Note: I have a fully charged good battery, I have lubed the bendix shaft and cleaned and checked security of all wiring. Any help would be appreciated!

Two things that'll keep the gear from moving up the shaft and engaging the ring gear. The starter's not spinning fast enough or the shaft is dirty. If you're sure the battery's hot and all the connections are good and clean, move the pinyon gear up the shaft, by hand, and douche the shaft down with WD-40.

c/6
Hooty

The separate bendix assy you are dealing with is a clutched assy. The sypmtoms you have are what I had before the clutch gave out. When you hear the starter spinning and the motor not spinning, don't assume the bendix did not engage. It could be clutch failure. Tough lesson to learn 10 miles off the coast.
Good Luck
ps I'm assuming your starter set up is the same as a 95 175 oceanpro

Many times I have been absolutely confident that I have done something and was very thorough about it only to find out later that my confidence had been misplaced. I suggest that you try another battery even if only temporarily. That is the most common cause of the problem you relate.
