I just bought a 1983 70 HP Johnson. I was able to start it manually with a rope, but could not start it with the starter.

I tested the wires and I am getting power to the celenoid but I don't know if any is getting to the starter. It makes a click when I turn the key.

I will maybe try a newer battery and if that does not work, look at replacing the celenoid and then the starter.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

My Limit

An '82 same type did the same to me; a fully recharged battery did it, suggest you even try with a jump from a car battery with the engine running. You can first measure whether the power reaches the starter positive connector, alternatively if the voltage on the battery goes down dramatically (from approx. 12 to well under 10) while you try to start ... then a stronger battery can give you a better clue.

tap your solenoid when you turn the key and see if it kicks in. You can also jump to the starter directly and see if it spins.

Go to Engine FAQ and do the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard wont start".

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

I put a new battery on it and it started right up. I guess the old battery was beyond charging.
