Anyone know the tricks of removing the starter from a 96 Seadoo GTX. Looks like accesibility is the biggest issue. Would appreciate all tips. Thanks!

Re: Starter on 96 SeaDoo GTX

not all that difficult, remove the air box from the carbs un bolt the motor mounts and carefully tilt the side of the engine up placing the back of the engine on a block of wood to hold it up, do not push or pry hard on the engine as you can crack the carbon seal on the driveshaft, just lift it up enough to get to the starter bolts, to do the motor mounts just unbolt the top bolts and leave the bottom bolts attached to the hull. to save a lot of bad words when reinstalling the starter I replace the two front bolts with allen cap heads it makes it easier to put them back in. also to make it easier to see and access the front motor mount remove the glove box just pop up the 4 plastic fasteners and take the box out the fasteners look like phillips head screws but they actually pry up they don't unscrew.

Re: Starter on 96 SeaDoo GTX

Hey thanks for helping. How many bolts hold that starter on? I removed three; 2 on each side of the starter and the one that attaches the negative battery lead. The starter will not budge. I tapped it a little to see if it would loosen up (original starter) but i cant get it to loosen up. Seems as it there are more bolts holding it on but i can't see (or feel should i say) anymore. I go to those without removing the air box. Am I on the right path or am I as screwed up as a football bat? Never spent much time under the seat of these things.

Ooops. Just looked at a cut sheet of that starter and it appears there is a bolt on the back of it too. Told you I resembled a football bat. Do I have to pull the air box and remove the motor mounts or is that just to keep my language clean?

with the air box removed you would have a better chance of seeing what you are doing, and an easier access to everything but remember putting it back is a lot more difficult than removing it and your chest will hurt from leaning in the hull for extended periods of time, you should also remove the 4 10 mm bolts that hold the seat tray with the big hoses to the hull so you can access things better in the back and the pto cover .

Re: Starter on 96 SeaDoo GTX

Thanks. I took it off without touching anything else. Wasn't too bad. I'll test it this week and take it from there. I have a new coil and starter relay for it as well so maybe before weeks end it will be back on the water.

Ok replaced the starter, ignition coil and starter relay. Not too bad - the bottom bolt on the starter was a bit touchy but overall went well. The boat will now not give the "ready to start" beeps when the lanyard is attached. Battery is at full charge and I have checked every fuse I can find on this thing. Before all of the above mentioned work was done, the boat was jump started with a battery charger a few times. Any clues????

Just now got back to work on the ski. Went back through the wiring and found my mistake. I had put the iginition control wire on the wrong side of the starter relay; thus not seeing the 12 volts. Back on the water. Thanks Jeff.

Re: Starter on 96 SeaDoo GTX

I did the exact same thing this past Monday. I pulled the battery charged it. I was too impatient so I pulled the battery out of the other doo and still no go. Then I finally remembered that I was supposed to remember if it didn't work that I wasn't sure which side the wire was supposed to go on. Well, I got the original battery back and the wire swapped. It started right up. It was a frustrating hour.

I was only replacing the relay. It took all of 10 mins for the actual repair.

Glad you found your problem.
