Starter Issues

The starter has been giving me trouble on my mercury 402

Originally had a slow turn replaced the cables and that fixed that.

I open it up to find that some of the brushes were damaged. Purchased a new set and it ran great for a few turns, but then just a clicking noise (one click only), all cables are tight and most of them new, but the starter is getting voltage but not drawing any just one click!

Any ideas?

Re: Starter Issues

Try jumping the big wires on the solenoid. If the starter works properly replace the solenoid. If not your local auto electric can check and rebuild the starter.

Re: Starter Issues

Thanks I tried that no go, tested each of the segments in the starter at 180 degrees from each other, all read .8 ohm except for one. Although when I take the reading from when the outside terminals i get 4.36. I'll drop it to a specialist
