1998 Four winns
5.7 Volvo GS I-O,
Starter spins but bendix does not engage. Clymer indicates there is an assist solenoid. Does any one have an idea where this might be located? The exhast riser is in the middle of the manifold, and attached to the front of the riser bolts is a large plastic cover where there are two 50 amp breakers, and the connection plug from the dash plugs in.

any help would be appreciated. I really do not want to pull the starter, because the only way to get to it is to pull the exhaust manifold off, or pull the engine

Re: Starter Issues

I have an older engine but it may be the same for you. Mounted on the starter is a solonoid that pulls in and pushes the bendix to engage the flywheel. It is the small round can on top of the starter.

I have a similar problem. You might want to look at the thread I have for my problem.

Another possible cause is that the flywheel has broken teeth and the flywheel is just stopped in a bad spot where the missing teeth are over the bendix.

Hope this helps.

Re: Starter Issues

Thanks for the quick response. I don't think it is the flywheel teeth. The boat has sat for two years without any use. I used a screw drive on the front pully to rotate the engine to ensure it was not frozen, and it turns fine. I know I did not stop in the same spot.
When I turn the key, there are no clicks, only the sound of the the starter spinning. I know about the solenoid on top of the starter, but the manual seems to reference an additional solenoid.

What you need to do is throw that Clymers manual away and get yourself a Volvo Penta manual.
Volvo's don't have slave solenoids, they do have start relays, but if it was bad, then your starter motor wouldn't run.
Time to pull the starter and have it checked.

Re: Starter Issues

Update: It was the solenoid. It was stuck. Bought a new one from Napa ST170. What I thought was the starter spinning turns out to be the electric fuel pump running in the start position. I had to pull the exhaust manifold to get to the starter, and I was surprized there was no water in the exhaust system. Got It started last night and I now know why there was no water. the circulating water pump is leaking .
