Starter Issue...

new 350 engine, new flywheel, new mallory starter, new optima battery.. timing is good, all connections are good, ignition good. starter grinds on start up and wont start every now and then. we tried shimming it but it seems like the problem is that the gears dont contact each other enough and need to engage each other deeper (gears of starter 'burn out' on gears of flywheel and dont catch). checked the pattern and it seems to be fully engaging depth wise but is rounding the top of the gears on the flywheel.

WHAT ELSE COULD THIS BE?!
thanks for any help..

Re: Starter Issue...

by the way.. we counted the number of teeth on both the new and old flywheel (same) and the part numbers match up.. the starter is the 4th one we got.. long story.. but they were all the same from 3 different places so im assuming the one we have now is the correct one.

the old motor was a 305 volvo penta which got replaced with a bare 350 block from a large reputable boat company with the other parts switched over. it runs good other than the starter issue..

Re: Starter Issue...

You may have blown your ring gear.

If you have tried 4 starters and the problem gets worse, you may have damaged the teeth on the fly wheel to the point of no return.

you will probably have to change the fly wheel or ring gear and get a 5th starter.

I would suggest you do some P/N and OEM research to see what the miss match is...Got to be a non-compatible issue between the bell housing, starter or flywheel.....Some ring gear-fly wheels are engineered for a bell housing mounted starter from the rear, others from the front.

Who sold you the engine? Can they help you?
