hello all, I have a 78 vip vixen 19ft that I am doing a complete restore on. I went to start it the other day and I think the starter is binding up. there us a grinding noise that comes from the starter and the motor moves but barely. I can turn the crank just fine so I don't think is the motor. also when I turn the crank i can here a ping noise like the starter is disengaging. I was going to replace the starter but I cant seem to figure out a way to get to it. there isnt a hole lot of space to work with. I cant seem to figure out a way to even get my hand back there. I really dont want to pull the motor for a starter replacement.

once again its a vip vixen 19ft with the 898

any advise, tips or tricks?

An image of your engine bay may help us a bit, but sometimes you have to disassemble some seats or storage boxes to get in there.

Not uncommon to have to pull engines for starters. You said you were doing a complete restore so may as well do the mechanicals too.

You may have to pull the exhaust manifold off to get to it.

I cant seem to get any pics to load at the moment. the starter seems to be down really close to the oil pan.

Couldn't find your exact year but looks like it has a seat on each side of the engine hatch. It may have angle brackets under the seat base which screws hold the seat base to gain access.

Ayuh,... It Is, 'n it's mounted with 2, 3/8" bolts, straight up from below,...

If yer doin' a restoration, build yerself some room to work on yer motor,...
