starter gear wont engage flywheel

200 hp johnson 1996<br /><br />starter gear wont rise upon ignition to engage flywheel<br /><br />any ideas?

brock,<br /><br />Rotate the drive, by hand. Turn it the opposite way of engine rotation. It will "walk" up the shaft when you do this. While "walking it", lube the shaft with WD-40. Do this several times and it should free up.

brockw,<br />he means to rotate the gear on the starter. it will start to raise up and engage as you rotate it. Spray the shaft with wd-40 as you rotate it and it should free right up.

Or replace it in it's entirety, hate to have that happen out at sea. Have you tried connecting your battery ? Sorry just had to get that in, being the wise guy that I am.
