Does anyone know the type of starter that fits a 1979 Johnson 70 Hp outboard model #70El79R?
The only number on my starter is MGL-503-1 and I can not find this part.
I would need the type/maker and part number of the starter.
Also, will a 9 tooth replace a 10 tooth starter?
Thanks.

There is a Prestolite 0386657 , which would have MGD 4115 or 4110 stamped on it.
Also an American Bosch 0386657 (10629-23-m030sm) listed

There are a couple of Sierra replacements as well as an Arco replacement. The current Johnson PN is 586281

Why do you need to replace your starter, TG?? Many starters get replaced that aren't broke, and starters can be rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Tell us more.

Re: Starter for 1979 Johnson

I did come across repair kits for starters. I just figured that if I could find one cheap enough that I would replace the old one with a new one. I guess it will all depend on the price and the amount of time I want to spend on it. Do you suggest just rebuilding the old one? Is it easy?
Also, I am seeing a lot of 9 tooth starters and I have a 10 tooth. Will a 9 tooth replace a 10 tooth?
