Engine 2001 Marine Power 5.7 Vortec. On my way to fish the other day the starter engaged at 3k rpm. Shut down boat immediately. Restarted and starter stayed engaged. Thought it was key switch so put key in on position and started at relay. That worked and starter did not stay engaged. Ran the rest of the day without problems. Was going to put new key switch before next trip but went out for a short run yesterday without putting new switch. Engine started fine. Was at a sandbar with the kids went to leave started engine with key switch starter stayed engaged. Shut down and disconnected S terminal from key switch and just touched the wire to start. Engine started and starter did not stay engaged. I thought ok definetely key switch. Idleing down channel to boat ramp all of a sudden starter engages( S terminal still disconnected). What is going on? How does starter engage with wire removed from switch? Bad relay(engine uses relay instead of solenoid)? Thanks for any help.

The starter is doing it's job, it's trying to start the engine. Something is telling it to. IF the "S" terminal is bare gotta be that relay shorting out internally.

Thanks for the replies. Does the new Relay come with pigtails to butt connect the wires too. The relay thats on now does not seem to have any splices or should I just replace with regular style solenoid. Thanks again for your help I always had outboards this is my first I/O.

Relays are pushed into a socket, not hard wired in.
The relay should just pull out of the socket. Not always easy though.

Here is a picture of a typical relay used in marine applications for many years.

It's very possible you have a defective igntion switch, or even damaged wiring causing the problem.

The relay cap will pry off the base with a small screwdriver. Open it and have a look; I thinkk you'll find corrosion in there.

Replaced Relay and key switch today. Started engine in driveway and starter worked properly. Turned key off started again and starter stayed engaged what now? Is there a solenoid on the starter could that be the problem?
