I have a '91 Suzuki DT 85HP and when starting the alternator clicks up to the flywheel, turns an inch or two but not enough to get past compression. The batteries were charged fully and were tried independant and in parallel; tried directly attached to the starter and mostly all I got was a click and some sparks.

I was told I probably need to rebuild my starter but before I spend $150 on a rebuild what kind of maintenance can I do first?

I can turn the flywheel with two hands flat on top or with a wrench.

Is there a shaft to lube (use engine oil?), brushes to clean (use brake/motor cleaner?)

I have the clymer Suzuki shop manual so I should be able to get it apart and back together.

Thanks in advance.
