Starter burnt out?

Yesterday while trouble shooting my engine the starter stopped working. It would only spin, but the top part never pops up. It seems like it spins at a slower speed now.

The parts store says I need a new starter. My questions is does this sound like the bushings were burnt or went bad? My buddy was cranking it pretty quick and for what may have been 30 secounds or more.

Hi, Nivram.

Given that you are also having problems with charging I think there is a good chance that you have bad battery cables or high current cable connections.

Disconnect all battery cables at both ends, thoroughly clean and reconnect. Give special attention to where the battery ground cable connects to the engine block. Check for corrosion in the cables themselves. Try again.

Let us know about your starter and your charging system.

If your battery and connections are good you may just need to lube the bendix.(The part that spins up)WD 40 will work but tends to dry out, some other spray lube like CRC that stays a little wetter will last longer.

Re: Starter burnt out?

I ended up getting the starter rebuilt locally here in Miami for $35.00.
