Starter Bolt Broke off

I have a 3.0 Litre Alpha one engine and went to start it this weekend and nothing but "Click". I pulled the engine cover off and saw the starter hanging by the wires. After closer inspection I noticed that one of the bolts (short bolt) was still in the block and that the starter housing was sheared around the bolt hole. No problem right buy and new starter and install it. I then picked up the other bolt (Long bolt) and it to had broken. I felt around the bolt hole to find that it was broken flush in the block. Anyone have any Ideas on how to get this thing out?

I have only been a boat owner for a month so please bear with me if I failed to mention some vital information or I am using the incorrect terminology

I am sorry to say that you will probably have to pull the motor out to do the repair.Charlie :( :(

Re: Starter Bolt Broke off

When you get the motor out, if you are not very experinced at extracting broken bolts that have to be drilled out, do yourself a favor and take it to a machine shop and have them do it. The starter bolt holes are precision drilled and unforgiving if the hole is messed up from trying to extract the broken bolt.

Also, before you pull the engine, try turning your engine by hand/wrench to see if it will turn. Most broken starters are caused by engine being locked-up. Possibility of water in the cylinders.
