starter acting up...

Okay, I have a 30' fairliner with a 350 inboard. After just purchasing it, we replaced the points, condenser and plugs. We also re-did the carb.
I put everything back together and she fires right up.
But now the only way to start the motor is to turn the key to the "on position" and use a screwdriver on the starter to fire it up.
I took the starter out today and I'm about to figure out what is wrong with it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. I'm thinking I should check the brushes and make sure the armature and field are not cracked or anything like that.
A friend of mine mentioned something electrical needs replacing, but I can't remember what exactly he said.
Am I going to have to buy a new starter, or can I re-build it?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Brother Chris...

Re: starter acting up...

Just to add to my above post.
When I turn the key to start the motor, all it does is "click". Once in a while it will start the motor, but not often. The battery terminals are tight and all connections to the starter are tight as well.
Thanks,
Chris...

Sounds like a bad starter solinode. They can just stop working without warning. Usally you can just get a solinode and replace it.

Thanks skeffer. That's probably all it is. I'll keep posting if that doesn't work.
Cheers,
Brother Chris...

Mine was doing that too. Every so often it would be dead when I turned the key. Turning the key a couple more times and it would crank. It is a little unnerving when it happens away from shore. Dealer removed starter and sent it out for rebuild. Rebuilder sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with it. Dealer replaced the solinoid and it has worked since without incident.

Thanks Jimmbo, I just took the solenoid off and going to buy one tomorrow. That should take care of the issue. I'll post if it doesn't.
Thanks guys.
Brother Chris...
