Title says it all, Maxum 2100, 5L mercruiser with Alpha 1 Gen ll outdrive accidently started with the drive in the trailer position. Instantly stopped the engine, lowered drive and restated. Initially thought I'd got away with it however noticed no longer achieving full revs, down from around 4600rpm (47 mph) to about 4000rpm (40mph), engine / drive also sounding slightly rough. Plan to take the boat to the local Mercruiser dealer but would appreciate your thoughts on likely damage before doing so. Thanks in advance.

If the engine was run long enough without water going thru the drive, then you likely toasted your impeller. It only takes a few seconds running dry to destroy it. Not sure what other damage, if any may have occurred.

Ayuh,..... I find it hard to believe the issues are even remotely related....

Was there water to the drive when this happened,..??
A smoked impeller leads to an Overheat 1st, which could of course lead to much more than a loss of 600rpms at Wot...

Is this a docked boat,..?? Sea life could cause the lack of rpms...

The quick start, 'n shut-down probably stressed the u-joints, gimbel, etc.,...
But it wouldn't/ shouldn't effect the Wot performance...

I 100% agree with Bond-o. Assuming the pickup was still in the water (which it is on mine) I have a hard time believing starting once briefly in the up would really cause any immediate failure. It didn't on mine  As stated it would be hard on things and repeated or long duration running could eventually cause u-joint failure, but no immediate cause and affect on WOT. I would look elsewhere.

Thanks for input guys. Pick up was submerged and engine running temp is normal. Sealife not an issue as boat only used in fresh water and hull recently cleaned. Definately a low level rumble not previously there and was thinking along the lines of stressed / damaged drive shaft or gimbal bearing.
