Start-up after storage

What you you folks think..50hp still on boat, place a plastic 55 gal drum under lower unit fill with water and run it for the first time in the new season. Instead of using the ear muffs. Less of a mess without all water running all over the place. Anyone try this?

Been there, done that. Muffs are easier. With the barrel you're in for an adventure and a soaking. Just my 2 cents.

We used to keep a 55 gal drum in the back yard for our motors up to 20hp...pulled them off the boat and mounted on the drum. Getting the drum under bigger motors while on the boat is a major hassle though. I do muff now, even with a 3hp.
