I've been having issues cold starting my 150 and restarting it after turning it off when moving from one fishing location to another.

To initally start a cold motor, according to the manual, I have to pump up the bulb, place the throttle in the forward position till it clicks then push the key in to activate the choke and turn it to the right to turn the engine over. This never works, not even after doing it several times. To start it I do all the above but push the throttle 3/4 the way full and turn it over. Most times it will kick off but I have to quickly push back the throttle to avoid racing the engine. Sometimes when I do this "pull back" the engine stalls and I have to start all over again...frustrating!

Once the engine is running and I drive it to a location, turn it off then start it up again, I have to go through the same procedure. You would think a warm engine would start just by turning the key with the throttle in upright neutral postion or at worse in the forward cold start position?

Generally it idles ok once started, but sometimes stalls when placed in gear. To me it seems to idle a little too slowly.

When you drive it along, giving it gas it runs like a champ...I get 52mph out of it with no issues and no trouble going fast or slowing down.

WHAT COULD BE THE TROUBLE?

thanks for you help...

I don't know when the carbs were rebuilt or cleaned last because I only had the boat a year.
I do not have any problems once the engine is running, it takes off good when I give it the gas...no hesitation or stalling. The stalling comes only when I am moving very slowly.

Unknown service history...

all it takes to melt a piston is a speck of dirt in a carb, if that cyl runs dry it will self destruct and you won't know until too late.
Its important to bring all servicing up to date so you know where you're at.

Get the factory service manual.
www.outboardbooks.com

Rebuild carbs with carb kits $23 each, do all 6.
Draw some fuel from tank, inspect for water in a glass bottle.
Change fuel filter.
Install water seperator.
Change water pump impellor. $12
Change gear oil, inspect for milkiness ( water).
Use new seals on oil drain screws.
Inspect sparkplugs, change or clean and gap.
Do a compression test, write numbers in your manual.
All parts are available here on iBoats.

I wouldn't run an engine without doing the above.

Does the cold start fuel primer solenoid work when the key is depressed? Pull the primer hose off the top of the top carb and turn the key to on, then push in on the key. You should see fuel pulsing out of that small hose. That engine should idle between 650 and 750 when in gear and floating normally in the water. The XP/GT models all have the Quickstart feature, which advances the spark timing when the engine is cold-a nice feature.
Decarbing the powerhead can improve ease of starting/idling.
