when trying to start boat , turn key starter hits but does not turn over , after a fair amount of tries boat eventually starts , and starts very well when motor turn over. l pulled starter had it check showed to be fine but put a new selonoid on it anyway. purchased a new battery and still same problem. safety tether works fine. what is strange , after running engine for a while , 15 t0 30min, cut off boat, it may start on first try and sometimes takes 3 or 4 trys before motor turns over.

thank TWR

Pull the spark plugs next it wont start and try again and see if it turns over. Watch for water out of the cylinders at the same time.
If the starter is catching, then a hydrolock may be your problem.

Check for water, they will run fine after you get them started.

Clean connections, good cables? Follow the neg cable from the battery to the block. Clean that connection real good bye taking off the connection clean the bolt and the block and the cable end.

Spray some corrosion pro on that connection.

You would be surprised how many ground connection problems cause poor starting.

Bye he way did you clean every connection on the starter shiny clean with sandpaper?

Disconnect the battery when cleaning the connections. The master plug it have good connections?

Follow the positive cable it connect to a slav selnoid? Follow and clean every connection.

Than when your sure you got them all check again. All grounds clean all connections clean.

Than when on the water and the problem presents itself you know You have to pull a plug and see if water shoots out the hole when you turn the starter.

Have you checked the connections on the coil? All the plug wires good?

You have points in the dizzy?

When was the last tune up done?

You could sandpaper the points check the gap?

Follow this test to show if there is anything electrical wrong , thank you Don S

If you find having following the tests that it may not be electrical the symptoms you have certainly point to hydro locking.

Good Luck

Ayuh,.....

The Redheaded bastard child of electrical circuits......

Everybody cleans,+ inspects the Positive side,+ Most folks just ignore the Ground side......

And,...
Don't forget there are 2 ends to each wire......
