start elec johnson 9.9

howdy, newbie boat owner here. i have a johnson 9.9 outboard on my sailboat(at least 10 years old), it has a black pushbutton on the motor that is used to start it, it always takes many trys to get it to start. the switch will do nothing for many pressigs, then it will eventually actually start starting. do i need to remove the top of the motor and clean(?) wiring/switches or do i obviously need a switch/starter/? i am sure this is an easy one- just don't know anything about 2 cycle outboards.<br />thanks, mike

If there is NO clicking then its likely that the switch is bad.<br /><br />When its NOT working...check to see if there is voltage at the solenoid on one of the small posts.<br /><br />This should confirm if its the switch or not<br /><br />TMD

wow! thanks for the fast reply! it dosen't click for many trys, then it will click a couple of times, then it starts up with relatively little problem...the other partner says it has been like this since they bought into the boat 10 years ago... i am maybe a little more picky than them and actually expect things to go vrooom when you 'start' them. sooo, does this alter the prior recommendation or is it the same, btw- i bet it would be interesting to say the least to see what is inside of that cover(?) on the motor- how do you get in?<br />mike

Mikey....could you post the model number of the engine please? Could you explain just where this pushbuttom is? Is it right on the front of the motor or recessed on the side? Thanks.

will go to the boat tomorrow and get what info i can off motor...no manuals that i know of-actually my first choice...i think the partners and i think a little bit differently...<br />o'well<br /><br />thanks so far,<br />mike

well, i've made some progress...might post this as a 'new' thread it has taken so long...<br />it is a johnson 9.9 mag flash cd sailmaster...that is pretty much all i can find written on the thing- if i knew how to get inside maybe i could find sn/model/year/etc numbers...but, i can't...there is a lever of some type on the back(water side) under the edge of the cover that i can move- it dosen't seem to do anything though...<br />the switch is black, pushbutton, on the side on the bracket(?)'under'the motor sort of...<br /><br />it does nothing- no click, no sound for several/many pushings, the it will maybe click once or twice- then it starts...<br /><br />mike
