New Islander 191 1994 owner!!!!!

Yep I picked up a pretty nice Islander to replace my 14 foot B&Y I bought last year. We (me+wife and boys 9&11) used the B&Y a couple of time this summer to fish and I got hooked (no pun intended!). I live in Quebec bordering on Ontario, NY and about 1 hour from VT and wanted a big enough boat for the family to be comfortable and safe on larger lakes such as Lake Champlain. I think 19' is "ok" for now and we'll see how the fishing bug progresses.
The PO seemed to be fussy pants and took good care of the boat. Was forthcoming about some of the minor things that were to be fixed and for the price I paid I have little to loose. I was lucky enough to see the add and he was in a mad rush too purchase a larger boat before all the good fall sales were had.
So I do have a few questions regarding the boat. The first being it was moored in a VERY dirty river. The hull is simply disgusting and needs a good cleaning. I sell POR products and we have "Marine clean" which usually cleans anything depending on how you dilute it. Score 1 dirt, 0 POR even pure. I searched the weeb and came up with a few ideas but not many relate to a white aluminium hull, specifically muriatic acid. What works the best to remove heavy grime?
I might be docking it next season to not have to drag her around, should I anti foul it as well?
Next thing on the list is the trim indicator. It's pegged. Reading leads me to the sensor. My question is, if the up-down works and the trailer works, is there a danger I lift to high? I don't care about the indicator for now and will redo the sensors over the winter. The PO showed me the optimal plane when I test "drove" it (cool).
Next question, some of the white edging surrounding the doors is broken. Where do I get replacement "T edging"
The boat came with fishfinder from the factory. The PO said there is a piece missing on the transducer but since I don't know what it looks like in the first place, I don't know whats missing. Should I scrap it and start over? it's an Apelco 365 and probably not worth the screws that hold it in place.... If I'm able to convince Santa I was a good boy I'd like a FF/GPS combo, any suggestions?

That's it for now folks, thx for listening to my long winded first post!!

Before you attack the exterior crude too aggressively, based on your post & questions, the boat is in great shape and won't require much work other then cleanup to be ready to use, correct? If so, you may not want to risk damaging the existing paint.

If the crude you're trying to get off the hull is stout enough to stand up to the Marine Clean you mentioned, is there a chance that the boat wasn't used & moored in brackish or saltwater. Near where you describe wanting to use the boat, it wouldn't be a stretch to get into brackish water. Or saltwater w/ or w/out using a trailer to tow it to the ocean. That can be tough stuff to get off the hull, and would be one of the big selling points for using anti-fouling paint...

Welcome to iboats!

But, yeah as NB mentioned, pix, we like pix. Esp of new to you, basically ready to go boats!

Re: New Islander 191 1994 owner!!!!!

jbcurt00 the boat has never been in salt water. It's been up and down the St-Laurence in the 1000 island region. The boat was docked on a river with a dam a couple of KM above it. A friend offered me his steam pressure washer to give it a shot, I think I'll try that out this week. I might look into the anti fouling paint if I do decide to dock it on a dirty lake.
I took a closer look at the transducer and it looks like the little speed paddle is gone so I assume the rest should work anyway. can I test it on land??
There's the vent for the gas filler that looks like it's been "tampered" with but I don't know what it's supposed to look like....
Last night we received about 2 inches of rain and this morning I went in the boat to see if all was ok and the cuddy cushions had a bit of water on them. Not sure where it was coming from.

Looks like I'll be due for anode replacement as well.

Well, now that there are pix:

Wow, funky crud for sure. Wow, that almost looks like there has been a fundamental change in the color of the boats hull or hull paint below the waterline, more like a permanent stain, not surface crud that can easily be removed.

Brand name Easy Off oven cleaner?

if the "t" edging is the stuff i think it is, they also used it on VW Westfalias....try GoWesty.com to see if their repro is the stuff you're looking for

Thanks for the idea. I Googled a bit and came up with tons of hits.

I`m going to redo all the doors and access panels!

Re: New Islander 191 1994 owner!!!!!

Just a thought on your FF/GPS combo...there are a lot of great units on the market and many love them but I do have reservations about them. First off they are quite pricey, in many cases you can buy one of each for less money. In my own case I chose to have seperate units as I can use both at the same time with full screens. My biggest concern was if either the FF or the GPS side went haywire then a whole new unit must be purchased, wereas if they are seperate only the faulty unit needs replaced. I found that a good FF was more valuable than a super delux GPS so I spent my dollars on a better FF and just bought a run of the mill GPS which works perfectly. If you are going to be navigating in strange waters then the newer map features on the GPS units are grand. I boat in the same (lake erie) all the time so the mapping feature was not of interest, just locating specific points of interest. Anyway just some food for thought on your FF/GPS purchase.

Super nice boat, congrats! Not sure how it works on tinnies, but I've had great luck with those Mr. Clean Erasers for taking crud off gellcoat. You could always try a small area first to make sure, as up under the bottom it doesn't look like it could hurt too much. As to "anti-fouling"...I'm not a fan and I live on Salt Water. I wouldn't leave my boat "in the water" just so I can avoid anti-fouling. Even if I didn't have a lift, I'd put it on the trailer and leave it at a storage facility near the ramp. Bottom paint, to me, is ugly and requires quite a bit of maintenance and re-application. Just seems like a lot of work and it spoils the factory colors. Just my 2 cents.

Well the boats been in storage for months already and I can't wait to get it out in the spring. Despite the reliability the 3.0L seems to have, I'd like to add a trolling/safety outboard as a back up. I've seen all kinds of mounts and wondering what do I really need. I'm thinking 10HP 4 stroke for the motor....
This up coming weekend is the boat show here in Montreal, so i'll see if there are any deals to be had.
Best used or new 4 stroke? Best "cheaper" mount?

thx

Hi All
I'll make this brief, I need a few leads for parts and one question.

On my 95 the evacuation vent is broken, it's like 2"x10". The ones at the very rear just under the rail.
Where can I find a replacement or something close to it?
Next, the T-edging on doors and access panels are toast and are 5/8" wide.
Good source for replacing it?
Lastly, my swim decks finish (varnish) I did 2 years ago has all but disappeared.
The boat hasn't even touched water in that time but is not covered.
What's the best varnish or clear coat that will last?

That's it for tonight, my bed is calling me!

thx in advance......

Well here we are almost 6 years later and the boats been used a couple of handful if times....
Sat for the last two years and I had put it up for sale last fall and couldn't do it. Had TONS of interest
I just felt I might not get another one in decent shape for the sale price.
I bought this to be a family boat and after a couple couple of outings my wife said she didn't like "waves".
Of course tin boat rock hard but I thought it was FUN!! LOL
Still married and kids are almost adults and my time is now my time.

She's been under wrap (boat) for her hibernation and it would seem the cats have been using it as a refuge.
All good noting damaged other the the "dash" carpet getting a little torn up. It wasn't that pretty so I'm replacing it.
What to use?
I had an older 9.9 4 stroke I bought as a kicker but figuring I was selling the boat, I sold it off. DUMB.
So I'm back on the hunt for a kicker on a budget.

As for the crud that was on the bottom of the boat? Slimy Grimy was the miracle cure!!!
Honestly I could do an infomercial about it I love it so much.
WITHOUT even scrubbing, ONE round with a garden sprayer and it was white as snow!

Anyway, just wanted to touch base, I'm back!

Yeah it would've been a big mistake to sell your Starcraft. Sure would be nice to see what your Islander looks like.

Are you referring to the vent tube for a blower in IO boats?

You'll have to post a pic of the trim you're referring to.

Teak swim deck, you might have to remove the wood slats, sand them and soak good with teak oil.

Oil provides little UV protection. Buy the most expensive MARINE varnish you can stand.
This is a case where you get what you pay for, more $$'s means more/better UV protection.

Put on at least 4-5 coats. Add additional coats every 6 months of exposure.
I personally like Interlux Schooner (it smells good) but there are plenty of others that work fine.

I was in my local Lowes Home improvement store this past week and saw PVC boards. They are white, but can painted to any color. It may be a more permanent option for you. https://www.lowes.com/search?searchTerm=pvc+boards

Great suggestion if I may say! I've used this product to trim around our windows a couple years ago now. Very stable exterior product and takes fasteners very well, just make sure you pre-drill and countersink beforehand.
