Any Islander owners have a few pics of how they set up the dash?
I would like to start buying a few things for my new 221 (compass, fish finder, radio) but before I start hacking away on a new dash I would like to see how others have mounted and organized the dash.
Any recomendations for a compass?

Re: Starcraft Islander dash pics?

While I do not have any pics of my islander dash, I can give you a description. The GPS and the fishfinder are mounted on the ball mounts close to the edge of the dash. The ball mounts are expensive but give unlimited adjustment for position and glare from the sun. As close to the windshield as reasonably feasible is the compass. Be sure to keep it away from electronics by at least 12", the Islander has a big deep dash and affords this priviledge. Also try to keep it in line with the center of the steering wheel/pilot seat as this will make it easier to maintain your course. On my Islander the compass is easily more than 12" from the electronics, the GPS is off to the far right and the fishfinder is left, closer to the center of the dash. It can be seen from any position on the boat. I have nothing directly in line of sight except the compass and get a clear view of what is ahead. The dash is large enough that i keep a plastic covered map of the lake on the passenger side for easy reference. This large dash is also protected from the wind while running, my map has never blown away. Hope this gives you some ideas.

View attachment 120109View attachment 120110View attachment 119860 This is from my 1971 18ft Chieften. Inside the drop down hatch are the fuse panels. The compass is visable at the top.

Thanks for the pics. Is it hard to read the far side display?
I was thinking of mounting a fish finder/GPS on the left side so the passenger had something to read. But when I am by myself, I don't know if that could be easily read.

Thanks. I am going to follow this advice on the compass location. Makes perfect sense.
