Starcraft Hull Number???

GM Starcraft experts,

the old 16 foot, deep/wide, Starcraft runabout that "ive fallen heir to" is hull number: 6218830.

does anyone have a hull number list AND can tell me anything about the boat from that number??? - specifically the YEAR & model NAME???
(i'm told by a "local expert" that the first 2 numbers are the year 1962, but i don't even know that, for sure. - this sounds likely as the trailer is an "early '60s-style" Dilly.)

it has been abandoned on a good friend's property for many years & nobody, including the game & fish commission or the DMV has ANY idea whatever whose it was more than 25 years ago.= there are simply NO records that old in the state.
(fyi, i am going to be able to get it licensed/titled as a "property owner's lein", as "the storage fees" have not been paid on the boat for well over 20 years.)

THANKS.

yours, PG

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

rick,

there is supposedly a "master hull number list" out there somewhere, that lists all the hulls that Starcraft made long ago - i'm hoping that someone here has it.

THANKS, PG

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

PGL,
There are several of us here who live and breathe the whole Starcraft History thing. Basically due to having no life :) :)

Actually, we just like the old boats and have been trying to figure out the best way to date and assign a model name to the boats. So far the only way we have been able to acruately do that is by looking at several factors. If we can get our hands on the sales brochures (and between a couple of us we have most of the 60's and some of the 70's) we look at hull type (deep v, semi v, etc), length, transome height, width, and beleive it or not, factory paint color. Also in some models, windshields come into play. In the 60's, a particular model came in one color only and it changed each year. Sometimes there is a number in the boat serial number (60's and first half of the 70's) that will coincide with the year the boat was manufactured. Some of the hull id numbers from the 70's exhibit that trait also, but you can't go by hull id or serial number alone.

If you make some measurements and post them along with a couple good shots of the boat making sure you show a good shot of the stern, we can figure it out for you. The rest is just guess work and the folks at starcraft will tell you there is no Master list because the numbers don't really mean anything.

Hope this helps! Now, lets see them danged pictures:) :)

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

Give that man a cigar... but how did that become the # instead of one picked by the manufacturer? That is the # on the Starcraft plate attached to the transom. Unless a special order:confused:

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

I told this story back when I first started posting. My boat is a 66 sunchief 21'7" in length. My father in law wanted to fish a nearby reservoir that had a length restriction of 20' so he wrote the VA Game & Fish a letter explaining that he was a retired vet and he had a boat that was listed wrong on his title that prevented him from fishing his fav reservoir and viola! Game and fish altered his title to show 20'. It was that simple! I have a copy of the letter in the boat file.

That kind of stuff happens all the time. The 63 Glaspar G3 I have is def a 63 based upon the serial number (they G3 serials have a rhyme and reason) but my title calls it a 68 Custom????? Who knows how that happened. Danged officials evidently would let you get away with just about anything back in the day :)

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

Captmills,

fwiw, NC has had some REALLY peculiar laws on boat titling/registration over the last 4 decades.- "quaint & odd" is the operant expression. = i wouldn't be surprised to find out that NC "DMV bureaucrats" told Starcraft to use a "different & unique" system for the boats sold there, at some time or other. - sometimes it seems like "government by whim", rather than by law.

trust me, some of the laws/directives/ordinances reference our beach place in Oak Island, NC are truly ODD! - we are talking "MAJOR STRANGE".
(in one case, the county "safety inspector", who works for the County Arson Investigation Unit, came out to the beach-house & told us that we had to change the sort of safety railing on the oceanside of the exterior deck. when we asked him WHY, he said, "because i said so. that's why.")

when my brother asked the county (in writing) exactly what specifications we had to meet to please the county, we were told by the county office (by telephone - they still, a year later, haven't sent us a letter.) that AFTER we built the new railing that they would THEN decide if it "meets enhanced safety requirements".

we changed the railing by "edge-nailing" a 2x8 to the top of the oceanside of the existing railing & that "pleased" the county (at least for now.)

Jim,

well inasmuch as the last one i bought was 250.oo & i ran it for well over a decade with little repair/minimal maintaince, i don't think i'll spend the 1600.oo + freight from CA. - neither am i going to buy a new 4-stroke for my 250.oo boat/trailer.

Truly the inspectors in Brunswick county NC are in a good ol' boys system.

"Why, because I said so" Sounds about right for them.LOL

Currently and as long as I remember hull ID numbers being inbedded in the hulls, the last two numbers designate the year model. It's an industry standard her in the states now.

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

Bob,

as i said earlier, Brunswick County is "government by whim". = i grew up in an "old boys system" in rural east TX & i'm used to that system - my problem with the NC "good 'ole boys" is that, once "bought", they don't "stay bought".
(CHUCKLE!)

the "do it & then we'll decide if it's OK" comment just "blew my mind". - otoh, my brother had SMOKE coming out of his ears!!!

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

Bob, it may be an industry standard but in the mid to late 60's and some early 70's Starcrafts it is often not the case.

Re: Starcraft Hull Number???

I knew that, that's why I said imbedded. All the ID #'s I've seen in glass hulls and the tags riveted on aluminum worked like that. Who knows what they were thinking in the 60's into the 70's.
