Ran some temperature tests on my engine this past weekend and the results were somewhat troubling. First, following the repair manuals instructions I ran the boat at 3000rpm for over 5 minutes. I then took temperature readings with an infared thermometer on both thermostat pockets. They port side measured in at around 112 and the starboard side measured in around 115 - close enough but the temperature range should have been 140 plus or minus 15 degrees. This means the engine is being overcooled? Is this a bad thing??
The second test was running the boat at 5000rpm. I am uncomfortable running the engine at that level so I ran it around 4250-4500rpm The book said the temperature should be running below 120 degrees. The starboard side measured in at 112 but the port measured in at 119.5. The starboard side was also noticebly hotter to the touch. Should I be concerned about this?? 119.5 seems to close for comfort for that 120 degree mark. It also troubles me that one side is running cooler than the other!?!?!?!
