Starboard side exhaust elbow too hot!

I recently purchased a 1979 Tiara 2000 it has a Mercruiser 898 and the starboard exhaust elbows gets much hotter than the port side. I first noticed it when I had to replace the exhaust bellow that attaches to it. Shortly after I replaced it, it cracked again. I just replaced it again but I am hesitant to take it out because that side still gets much hotter than the other.
The last time I had it apart I also removed the thermostat housing. There was no thermostat. Cleaned everything up and put it back together with the thermostat thinking the thermostat was the problem. While I had it apart I also tried to clean the inside of the exhaust elbow.
I pushed water into the elbow intake with the garden hose while it was apart. The water only came out at the back side of the double walled pipe. Is this normal? Or should it have come out all the way around the double walled pipe? I have tried to find a cut sheet of the elbow to see where the water should be flowing but no luck.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Re: Starboard side exhaust elbow too hot!

Howdy,

Do you know how old the exhaust manifolds and risers are and have you had both of them off and inspected the areas you can see in the water jacket?

If there's a LOT of rust clogging them and you can see the obstructions, both the manifolds and risers should be replaced.

They do last a "Good Long Time" in fresh water but they still rust. The rust eventually clogs the passages and causes "hot-spots"

I don't think you can use a garden hose to move enough water thru the risers to completely fill them up and check for full flow.....

You might be able to do it if you have them off....

It's not uncommon for one side to be a little hotter than the other side.

Thanks for the reply,
The manifold stays cool. It's just the elbow and the rubber tube that get so hot you can't touch them. I did have the elbow off when I used the garden hose.
Thanks again
