Hi, I have a 1987 4.3l gm alpha 1 I/O. It usually starts right up the first time.

I have been having a problem with the engine stalling when shifting out of gear into neutral. Once it stalls it doesn't want to start back up. After a few minutes of trying it will usually start back up. When it finally starts up it sound like a pump or something in the engine is running and it is loud, but it goes away after a few seconds. It is sort of a metal sound (I was thinking the ring gear was worn and that could be the sound but it doesn't sound like that, Its a more throatier sound, like a revving sound but the rpms stay the same). Could it be the oil pump? Oil pressure is always good at 40 psi. It always makes this noise at start up; sometimes longer and louder then other times. Once on, the idle is around 600rpm which is low but once I rev it up it idles at 800rpm's. Only on start up does it idle low. I was thinking of replacing the shift interrupter switch(3 years old) but I am not sure that the switch is the problem. I am planning on changing the spark plugs, hopefully that will help. There just under 6 months old.

What else could it be?

Also I have noticed white smoke coming from the exhaust. Very little amount just enough to see then disappear.

Other than that everything runs normal.

Please help.

You need to start with a new shift cable, the switch is working properly

Does the outdrive need to come off to change the shift cable? And what do you think that noise is?

Could be the starter is not letting go of the ring gear. IMHO

It doesn't sound like the ring gear with the starter. I forgot to mention that if I rev the engine the sound get louder and then by 2000rpms it will go away until I start it up. What could it be. Does the outdrive need to come off to replace the shift cable??

Ditto on that one

Starter not retracting the drive gear when the key is released. Sometimes does it sometimes not.

Does that mean I need a new starter? I have just replaced the starter 2.5 years ago with a new one and it was a pain to remove and install. Is there a way to fix or diagnose the starter if it is not retracting?

Thanks

I am almost positive that the shift cable is good. I removed the outdrive about 9 months ago to replace the bellows and gimbal. I tested the cable and it worked fine. But when I first shift the motor into gear the throttle sags a bit before catching????
