Re: stalls when i shift into forward

Usually the low speed jets are set in too far and the engine is running lean at low speed. On the difference, could be the load on the engine. The prop was designed for forward thrust. Reverse thrust may be less of a thrust requirement. Never thought about it.

Too Lean, and weak spark would be my guess. I agree with the admiral. open the pilots 1/8 of a turn at a time till it does not stall. Timing is correct?

Do not use Quick Start or you'll wreck the motor. Check you idle speed and set higher. Also open low speed jet 1/4 turn at a time.

Re: stalls when i shift into forward

My old Merc likes to do this stunt, most of the time its at a busy dock...in high wind....

There have been many reasons she wouldn't idle in forward;

Two pistons burned up
Lower seal dried up allowing water into #4 and #2 (bleed hose, coincidentally the same two that burned up....)
Carbs getting funky
Oil on the points...and grease due to my obsession with overdoing it (I keep "Bilge Buddies in the gun safe to soak up the dripping oils)
Bad fuel and too much oil in the mix....leading to,
Fouled plugs

The old gals trying to tell you somethings out of whack, finding it can be a P.I.T.A.

...its not advisable to use anything other than mixed fuel to get her going. Starting fluid, lighter fluid, propane, straight gas, alcohol, white gas, none of this has lubricant in it. The bearings get the fuel before it gos into the cylinder and the other stuff washes the oils off.
I have a spray bottle with mixed fuel for servicing the motors.

Go to the ramp and back it in until the A/V plate is submerged and adjust the idle mixture and idle speed in forward. Have the carbs or fuel pump been serviced lately? Reverse doesn't have the same load as forward.

Part #21 - Idle tube is seated, it is not an adjustable part. Other than floats the only adjustment is part #26, backed out 1 to 1 1/2 turns from lightly seated for the initial mixture adjustment.
