Stalling when reversing - Yamaha Malta

I have a Yamaha Malta 2-stroke 4HP OB, from around 1985. It doesn't have a reverse gear, so I go astern by spinning it through 180 degrees. In this configuration, it has a tendency to stall at moderate reves, usually when I'm in a tricky situation such as backing out of a berth! This doesn't seem to happen when moving forwards; and generally the motor is very reliable. Can anyone suggest a reason for this, or how I might avoid it happening? Thanks!

When you turn the motor around you may be kinking the fuel line and starving the engine?

oberboat: It's not the fuel line kinking - the Malta has an integral fuel tank which turns with the motor - but thanks for the suggestion.
