Stalling Force 120 when popped into gear

I have a 1990 force 120 with an 89 125 top end (long story). Runs great on plane, fires right up, however it dies when engaging into forward or reverse unless I rev it a bit. It seems to idle ok once I bring it back down. It happens when I start it after its warm or on initial start up.

Any Ideas?

Manual said your idle speed in foward gear should be 700-800 RPM. Where is your?

It could also be the idle mixture setting. Play with it a little and keep track of the adjustments. 1/8 at a time. In your case, i suspect lean setting so you should adjust in the counter clockwise direction. But make sure your idling RPM is also correct. These two adjustments are to be made hand in hand. It cannot just be one or the other.

Air screws. In till they just touch(gently). Then out 1 and 1/16th turn.
Srart in drive way,1200rpm.
Start in water. In gear and motor warm 750-800 rpm.Less than 750 might cause stalling when engaging gears.
Then air screw front or side of carb.In the water/warm.In till it bucks/stalls ,stutters. Then out 1/2 turn.
That's the way the factory techs taught me.

OK,

Are the air screws the large gold screws on the drivers side of the carbs? These are the only ones that I see that I can adjust.

The carbs are from my 1990 120 hp. The top end I purchased last year is an 89 125. Would this cause the issue?

On another note, the brass screws on the drivers side of the carb are at 2 and 1/8 turns from bottom.

i have 86/125 did same thing as yours, i finaly figured out through trial and error that idle was to low needs to be 750-800 in forward gear in water and 1000-1100 at idle in water in a tank or in lake, make adjustments with screw and lock nut on long shaft that throtal linkage ties to took me a couple of times to get right. Good Luck!!!

The screw with the spring. That's the air screw.Should be about 1 and 1/6th out for initial adjustment.
Mikes right on the idle. It's called the towershaft. On bottom of shaft is a screw with a lock nut.
Thats where the idle is adjusted. In the drive about 1100-1200rpm.
The older carbs have the air screw on the front.Newer are on the left/back of the carb.

brian my 150 did the same it'd die at the dock trying to move and a few times during idling after the wakeboarder went down....I too turned screw on the shaft with the locknut....But I couldn't get anymore out of it so I went to a stainless nut that was just a shade thinner and it gave me the adjustment I needed.....I got the nut at fleet farm in the lil packages of three bolts nuts and washers....

Re: Stalling Force 120 when popped into gear

I was looking at what I believe to be the shaft that all the thread replies are referring to. Is this the same shaft that has the timing adjustment on it at the top?

Am I looking at the right shaft?

If this is the right shaft, won't this change the timing?

Re: Stalling Force 120 when popped into gear

yeah it does change the timing some but do you know if the timing dead on? the timing on my boat is 30 degrees running 32 degrees cranking speed...so theres a lil room to play with it...according to the force engineer I speak with on my boat....

oh one more thought check the gapping of your towershaft arm and interlock lever...a cable may have moved, a roll pin fell out or broke changing this....mine the roll pin on the cable clamp was broke

Need a diagram, anyone have a link?

Not sure what the gapping measurement is or the interlock lever.

Re: Stalling Force 120 when popped into gear

the interlock lever is attached to the shaft rod coming from the midsection the book shows it close or touching to the towershaft mines operates at a 1/16 inch gap...I may need the adjust the timing some from there..

follow the towershaft to the front under the carbs you'll see this gap..

Re: Stalling Force 120 when popped into gear

So I am not a mechanic but I will take a stab at the steps based on the above posts:
1 move air screws in to 1 1/16 from bottom
2 change tower shaft idle screw until motor hits 1200 rpm (in driveway)
3 adjust carburetor plate so the control arm bushing is on the plate between the two marks
4 readjust timing to 30-32 degrees
5 adjust air screws in until motor sputters then out a ? turn
Would this be accurate?
