Stall, engine dies when out into gear, code 193 shift anticipate fault

I have a 2003 chap 243 with a 350 MAG. Half way through the summer the engine would stumble when put in gear. It progressively got worse and now dies when put into gear and sometimes is tough to restart. Ran diagnostics on it and it is throwing a code 193 shift anticipate fault. If i can get it into gear without dying and hit the throttle, it runs fine. Any ideas? Any additional info I can add to the post that will help?

Thank, Mike

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... What drive,..??

If it's an Alpha drive, My guess is the lower shift cable is bindin', 'n needs replacin'....

What outdrive? Sounds like you have an Alpha I Gen II outdrive with a failing lower shift cable.

Engine SN would also help.

Attached an image but unease it doesn't show up. Engine serial: 0m600463. Transom serial: 0m545932. Drive serial: 0L951747. Thanks for the input so far. Any idea what the code means?

It is an Alpha drive, not sure what gen. Will the serial tell us?

Yes, it's an Alpha I Gen II
The 193 indicates the shift interrupt switch was activated at the wrong time.

If the shift cable is binding from being burnt, corroded, kinked, or just wear, it will keep the shift interrupt switch activated too long and the engine dies. The shift interrupt switch basically turns off the ignition for a split second to allow the reverse cut gears to disengage.

Read this, it explains the system in more detail. HOW TO: How the Shift Interrupt system works - Page 1 - 288089

Ok great, thanks for the info. Doesn't the shift interrupt switch only activate when shifting out of gear? If so, why would it activate when shifting into gear and stay activated? Or is that just a symptom of a bad cable?

Thanks.

The reason it would be activated going into gear is because the cable is binding, or there is a problem inside the drive, or the linkage between the cable and the drive. 99% of the time it's the cable, and it's a very common problem.

Ok guys. Mechanic came out to the boat to take a look at it last week. He said it was the distributor cap and rotor. So he replaced that. Went for a lake test and it didn't fix it. So he hooked up a computer and got the code I posted earlier. He said he would call Merc and see what they say. The company the mechanic works for called this morning and said it is the interrupt switch. So I asked well if we replace it and it doesn't fix it then what. She told me it wouldn't be refundable. I wasn't happy. Long story short, tech called me a bit after and said he put a meter on the switch and found that the continuity was inconstant. He also said he removed the lower shift cable and it moved freely by hand. He said replace the switch. What do you think?

Welp, switch fixed it. Just put a new one in, lake tested in and out of gear many times. Worked just fine.
