I have a 1996 40hp Johnson, it idles at 750 to 800 rpms and will only idle for about 30 seconds and dies. If I get the rpms up to 900 it will keep running. It runs great at higher rpm's but not at an idle. It seems to be the lower cyclinder, is the carb dirty. I'm going to change the plugs this morning to see if that helps. On vacation here and don't have alot of tools.
