I am renting a houseboat for a week on the St. John's River in Deland Florida. I hear it has some of the best bass fishing in North America but I heard they had a big die off due to an oxygen problem from a flood. Is there any truth to this? Also what other kinds of fish are in the river and what baits do you suggest. We will be there the first week of March. Thanks

Leafnut,

I don't know much about the fishing on the St. Johns other than saltwater up by Mayport. You could log on to Floridasportsman.com and go to the freshwater or northeast section and ask. You would probably get some good info.

Re: St. John's River FL.

leafnut7, I just came back from down there. I fished Rodman Reservoir and did not fish the St. Johns, but did hear a couple reports that were good for bass.
A storm had came through when we were leaving and the wind was blowing about 20 to 30 and the white caps were everywhere on the river.
Go to this web pageand holler at fishnpicker. He lives right there and should be able to give you more info.

leafnut7

Here's hoping you did well down there. I put it at Ed Stone Park in Deland. We went out on Sunday, but didn't do very well. I caught a 7lb. 2oz. largemouth 2 weeks ago. Talked to a guy on the ramp yesterday who also caught a 7+. They're in there, I just haven't completely cracked how to catch them.
