Squirrels - Arrrrgh!

Danged squirrels are shredding my bbq cover (for nesting material I guess). Don't even know for sure - just my neighbour's .02 but he says he's seen it before. Myself, I never hear or see them. The cover is just a little more shredded each week. The cover went unmolested all spring.

Any advice on how to repel them? (in a way that won't attract local law enforcement, of course...). I'd like to be sure it's effective before dropping another $40 on a new cover.

My BIL had squirrel problems and dumped an entire container of hot pepper flakes down the hole in the tree where the the tree rats used to live :D

Since that one is already ruined, spread some type of hot pepper sauce ( tabasco ) on that area of the cover on the inside.

They're a royal PITA but according to laws in Ontario you're not allowed to discharge a firearm, use poision or adhesives and only live traps are acceptable. - what happens afterwards is up to you :)

I've heard the chili/pepper flakes work, but haven't tried them. I have seen first hand the mess they make of a travel trailer when nesting for the winter.

Good luck and let us know if you find a successful remedy.

Large dogs.

I have a scrawny "country" cat that I could lend you. (you can't have my dogs).
You will have to pay for shipping both ways and room and board though.:D

Why are you so sure it is squirrels??? Looks like rat mischief to me. Either way a mobile feline is both a good deterrant and executioner.

I am thinking rats too. They are also probaly keeping the bbq grease cup cleaned out which might be what the initial attraction was.

Another reason you have not seen any squirrels.

I had at least "a squirrel" chew up my patio furniture and the motor cover on a brand new JD high wheel mower. For no reason, it would just sit and gnaw on the plastic....I didn't take photos and try to ID the offending squirrel. I trapped all that I could for a while. The problem went away. I have squirrels now, but the culprit is gone.

Red Ryder BB Gun. If that doesn't work an old barn cat will. You could also use rat poison mixed with Peanut Butter.

I've just nailed 3 red squirrels that had taken up residence in my eaves, chewing a hole in it in the process. Used two rat traps with chunky p-nut butter. Took about 2 weeks.
