I have a '77 evinrude. I bought a new prop ($75), put it on, and out in the middle of a local lake, at max speed, My motor suddenly reved real high. I immediately slowed and put her in neutral. Turned it off, and trolled to shore. I thought I broke the shear pin on the prop, but that was OK. The prop turned by hand (while in gear) about 3/4 of a turn. Thought I has stripped gears in the lower gearcase.
Brought the lower unit to my local shop. They opened it and said the gears were just fine,, but that I had spun my prop. I told them that it was the first time out with it, they said it looked real clean and didn't know how it happened. I told them that I had bought it from Bass Pro book and I was going to send it back to them to see it it was perhaps a manufactures defect. Anyone out there ever heard of this happening before with a new prop. I also found out that my 'shear' pin isn't really a shear pin. It's just a drive cupler. Can I - should I get a shear pin, so that that breaks instead of the prop?
I appreciate any advise. Thanks
