My son and I took the boat out last night for a little ride and some fishing. We covered 30 miles of territory. During this ride, I noticed a soft "bump" sensation two or three times while at WOT; almost as if we hit a small log. However, we would lose a little speed. The engine would maintain it's RPM's without spiking.
This occured once around mile 18, then again around mile 22. When I got back to the dock, I tried to reproduce it by nailing the throttle from a still position, but it only happened once out of three hole shots.
Like I said earlier, it wasn't a hard, jolting hit, but rather a soft "bump".
The engine is a '73 25 hp Evinrude Sportster that runs like a champ. However, I've only had this motor a few months and know nothing about it's history.
I'm leaning towards worn dogs as the shifter already has a bias towards the forward gear (was like that when I bought it).
Any ideas?
